Racist Red Dawn tweets.
Red Dawn came out this weekend. Racebending’s review + bit of historical context is here: Red Dawn Remake: Our Review and Reflections
But just ugh. Fuck this movie. I’m glad Chris is filming Thor2 and not promoting this piece of shit. Basically this is how I feel:
:c
Chris, I hope that you never take a role like this again. I hope that having a daughter and finding success keeps you away from shit like this. I’m only forgiving you this time… but you have no second chances with me.
I don’t think this is Chris Hemsworth’s fault. When your an actor or anyone who isn’t a producer or a director, you take what pays in Hollywood and unless your mega, mega mega famous like Brad Pitt you keep your mouth shut so you don’t lose your job or get blacklisted. Hemsworth only really has Thor and The Avengers, so his career could still go either way. He still has to keep his mouth shut.
However, the director and producers can directly be blamed for this shit. Maybe the writers, since we don’t know what early drafts looked like and what changes might have been forced on them. But yeah, they don’t get a free pass on this. This shit is unacceptable.
WON’T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE FUCKING WHITE PEOPLE?!?!?!?!?!
Here’s why your argument is moot: Chris Hemsworth is not going to starve to death while homeless under a bridge because he turned down a racist-as-fuck movie or two… or three, or all of them.
He is definitely complicit in this racist bullshit. There is no argument otherwise. He willingly participated in it (I highly doubt anybody twisted is arm, no less put a gun to his head to do this shitty fucking film), and if he’s not old enough to know why what he did was wrong, he’s certainly old enough to be told.
And even if there were a zillion changes from the first draft of the script to the released version, there’s really no way it was edited like that hateful anti-Muslim film, so Chris Hemsworth was not tricked into anything, either.
I knew this shit would happen.
Actors, unless they are very famous and rich (like the 1% of the 1%), have no control over the movies they are in. The threat of being blacklisted hangs over them. You piss off the wrong person, your career is over.
But, I agree with some parts of what you’re saying. This is not about Hemsworth. This is about the people of color who were marginalized and vilified in Red Dawn. I’m glad attention was drawn to the racism in the movie and hope it fails at the box office. Maybe other directors will take note and not repeat this mess.
And the film not hateful towards Muslims. I have not seen the film, but from what I can tell, the antagonists are Korean. (Yes, yes, there probably are Korean Muslims, but the characters aren’t presented as Muslim.)
And here is where I point out that you missed my points.
He totally has control over which movies he auditions for. Sure, he is not in charge of casting, but he is in charge of whether he goes to casting to audition for the film.
How the fuck would Chris Hemsworth be blacklisted for not auditioning for a film? Actors don’t audition for everything ever all the time, and they aren’t getting blacklisted for it, so why would not auditioning for this racist shit be any different?
The hateful film I was talking about is this one, and my point in bringing it up was to prove that Chris Hemsworth is entirely responsible for his complicity in this film. He was not tricked into acting for a film, thinking it was going to be one thing and then, once it was edited and released, it was a completely different film like those actors were.
You cannot absolve him of his responsibility for his part in this racist bullshit just because he isn’t raking in the supermegabucks.
He made the decision to be in that film. He would not have been blacklisted for not auditioning for that film. He is responsible for his contribution to this yellow peril shit.
The end.
^^^^^^^^
Excuse me. Prepare to be hugged for a week. Thank you. Thank you.
