Self-Portrait as the Terrifying Spectre of Women’s Sexuality, 2012
Here, everyone, have some actual work I did for a real class.
I did an essay on Surrealism (the movement, not the style), and found myself increasingly frustrated with the ridiculous misogyny within. For as gorgeous and super-cool as the imagery is, the whole movement was really exhaustingly Freudian about women. Women were frequently depicted as evil killer void doombringers and a bunch of other Dave Sim-esque BS. The Praying Mantis was commonly used: The evil woman, whose sexuality is tied up in murderousness, and all that.
The first thing I thought was, “That’s really stupid, Surrealist guys.” The second thing I thought was, “But actually, that seems kinda punk rock, as a reclamatory thing.” And then I remembered that I had no ideas for my upcoming self-portrait assignment for Silkscreening class.
So this is more a fantasy portrait than anything else. I’ve never slept with anyone and then killed them.
…Yet.
that was a joke tumblr i’m not going to kill anyone
Dude I was just drunkenly ranting about my love/hate relationship with Surrealism for those exact reasons on Saturday night.
